DeMugPugs play Bromham

De Mugs Pugs

“Let's go to the hub

Let's go to the hub (oh baby)

Let's go to the hub (oh baby)

Come on, let’s go to the hub”

At the end of April, over 40 ukuleles of all types, shapes and sizes were out in force in Bromham. Local uke band, the DeMugPugs, founded and led by Jo Baines Robbins, put on their “Blue Suede Shoes”, headed for the Hub, and performed songs from the 50s and 60s in aid of four local animal rescue charities.

Jo did a fantastic job, as always, to keep us “All Shook Up”, with the help of Lee on bass and Nigel on drums keeping us in time. We like to think we get by “With a Little Help from Our Friends” and are definitely “Happy Together”! We are an enthusiastic bunch and would practice “Eight Days a Week” if we could!

We had the lyrics to each song on the screen behind us so the audience could join in,(although they may have had to peer round Lee who was in the middle of the stage🤪). And “Oh Boy” it was great to see people up and dancing - there was a group of jive enthusiasts who asked us if they could have room to do their thing, so we had left some space for a small dance floor. It was well used by them and the other keen dancers in the crowd, and it was great to see everybody “Twist Again”!

We had beautiful weather and were able to play with the doors open on to the patio, and both band and audience could take advantage of eating outside in the evening sunshine during the interval, thanks to the Owl in the Hub catering. Thanks so much to Louise, Matt and the team for hosting us so well.

Well “Good Golly Miss Molly” we had a fabulous time and we hope the lovely audience did too. We were made to feel very welcome. We would love to come back before too long and play the Hub again.

We raised over £1000, which was distributed to Search and Scan, Heron’s Farm Animal Rescue( who had a desk at the event selling eggs from their rescue hens), Solstice Missing Dogs and Leash of Life.

The DeMugPugs celebrated their 10th Anniversary last year with a number of exciting gigs such as the Fulltone Festival, Carfest, and an 80s night at the Devizes Wharf, as well as our usual gigs at local fetes, festivals and care homes. And to top it all were especially proud of Jo when she was awarded “ Outstanding Contribution to Music in the Community” at the Wiltshire Music Awards 2025. We have more exciting events coming up this year.

The band is made up of all abilities - “It’s Not Unusual” for us to have people who have only been playing a few months and others who have been playing for years. Everyone is welcome - both at our pub get togethers in Devizes, Marlborough and Pewsey, and the Devizes Music Academy, and at our gigs.
